  1. hi all, just continuing from my last week's promise of Global forum plugin. I got it working now and there are a few features I am still adding, so hope it to be available today/tomorrow.
I just want to know the features you want to see in this pluin.
    What It o does:
1.It allows you to create forum, subforums, topic which are not associated with any group. These are standalone forum and work as the normal forums do.
2.All the users of site can post to the forum/topics without need to join the forums(as there is a single forum integrated with the site)
3.It will not update the forum posts to activity stream(though, if you want you can do that).
4.All other features like sticky, edit, delete topic/posts etc
5.Admin:-yes, It is front end admin, so currently It will allow you to manage forum front end

Now my question to you:- What features you want in the admin panel, do you want to use it with group forum enabled/disabled and what else you want in this plugin.

Thanks @Greg for the idea of bringing this plugin to life

  2. Couple of quick thoughts...

    1. these forums should appear on the Forums Page, at the top, sticky, or somehow featured.
    2. it would be great to integrate with the new "follow" feature so someone could literally "follow" a discussion.
    3. RSS feeds
    4. Shared cloud tag with other forums on forums page
    5. These forums should have administrators/moderators, just like group forums
    6. this should with with the "move forum topic" plugin, so we can migrate existing forums over.
    7. Post should appear in member's activity streams.
    8. It should play nice with Rich's Forum Extras plugin

    This is really cool Brajesh.

  3. hi Greg
    Thanks for the features suggestions.
1.yes, I am still working on members feature to allow banning/unbanning users and giving them rights to become admin/moderator. This is still in development today, otherwise have tested the forum creation topic/posts and they are working :)

    2. thinking about it, you mean making topic as favorite or something else.
    3. I had missed the feed, thanks for pointing that. Need to include it back again.
    4.Yes, this is coming
5.Yes, It will have that, but it is under dev yet.
6.Yup! completely agreed, I will test with that plugin and see how can we move topic from group forum to here
    7. I will leave upto site admins to decide, they can enable/disable this feature.
    8. Yeh, that's what I am thinking too :)

let me work a little more and give it finishing touch, will be getting back again :)

  4. BP is about to release a "follow" feature...which I think is awesome. Like Friends but they don't have to Friend you back. This way you can filter activities in your stream by the members you are following.

It would be great to be able to "Follow" discussions as well. This would put them in your activity stream instead of your email inbox.

  5. Thank you in advance for this Brajesh. I've been following some usability threads and some things that have always bothered me about how bp works you've now addressed two of them. With our old community, everyone is used to standard forums and I wanted bp to go beyond that. It seems that the misconception is that the devs seem to think that with bp, you don't need forums and I want to be able to provide both.

As for this plugin, so long as I can manage and have forums listed on my forums page that don't necessarily belong to a group, I'm EXTREMELY happy. I had to download the forum extras just to have an index page but so long as I can list standard forums on that page, I have no problem with allowing the standard group forums to remain separate.

  6. I have a unique request for this, but it may possibly apply to others.

One thing every one of my sites have is a 'prayer request' forum as they are all church's. Having a separate forum that is not related to a group is perfect for this. I was using a group forum before.

    request:
There is a forum plugin called 'like' on the bp site. Long ago I had requested to have the 'like' plugin set so I could apply it to a single forum but never heard back. If I could use the 'like' plugin with your standalone forum without having to use it on the group forums then I am set.

--I play on changing just the word 'like' to 'I am praying for you' so that a person can see how many people who didn't necessarily respond to the thread itself, but are still praying for a person.

I can see how other users would use something similar, just changing the 'like' word to something else.

As I have always used heavily modified vbulletin sites in the past, you don't even want to hear what my wishlist for a buddypress forum would be like. I could probably come up with 200+ features that I use daily in vbulletin that probably will never exist in bbpress.

  7. Well hel-lo! I was just thinking about this earlier today :-)

As to the features, what you all said sound good especially the ability to have sub-forums and site admin decision on structure.
Will you be releasing this plugin soon, @Brajesh, like this week? No pressure :-)
I hope that this plugin is compatible at least with WPMU 2.9.2 and BP 1.2.3/4. Don't know about others here, but I would not be upgrading live installs of WPMU with BuddyPress activated to WP 3.0 until a few weeks after WP3.0/BP1.3 are released, so that would make it sometime early to mid-June :-)

  8. @mercime, yes for sure, It is coming tonight/tomorrow :) and yes, It will be compatible with wp 2.9/wp 3.0 and bp 1.2.4 branch/bp 1.2.3 both. for upgrade to wp 3.0, seems you are going to wait for long, we will have wp 3.0.1/3.0.2 by then :)

@shawn :) yeh, bb will need a complete makeover to compete with vbulletin.
will make sure to make it work with the like plugin :)

    @Chris
Thanks. It will be exactly as you have thought :)
Thank you all for the valuable inputs.

PS: will be away for now and will check back after 4-5 hours.

  9. @Brajesh Thank you! Yup, first-serve to installs without BP, so no stressful white screens, hahaha.

  10. This is a awesome idea. I'm so blown away I'll have to think awhile about features (I'm slow that way sometimes). I was wondering why the group-forum relationship thing.

    Great idea @greg

Thanks for picking up the ball and running with it @brajesh

  13. hi Greg
I am sorry to say it won't be available today. tried my best to put but still forum editing/manging is taking some time. So I am leaving it for tomorrow now. bad on me for not being able to deliver this today :(

  14. No worries Brajesh!

  15. Thanks Greg
Yesterday was something bad on my part. Hope to do something much better today :)

  16. Brajash,

A couple more thoughts for you...

First, because these forums will be independent of groups, there should be a separate "Forums" listing in the drop-down "My Account" menu in the admin bar. Ideally, there would be a "start a new forum" in the sub-nav that pops up.

And, there should be a "My Forums" listing on the profile page nav menu. Personally, I;d like to change the name to "Discussions", but I can do that with the language file.

Along that same lines, it makes sense that there would be some sort of way for a member to track their active discussions...maybe this is where the upcoming "follow" feature can come in.

Lastly, if a member has the ability to create forums, it would be nice to have a blog widget that would display activity from the discussions where that member is an admin. They could call it "My Recent Forums" or something like that.

  17. Will the global forums work independent of group forums? I'm not really a fan of the group forum directory listing and honestly wouldn't mind just having the group forums listed on the directory page. This would eliminate me using the group forum extras plugin just to have a good directory on the page.

I still want there to be a group forum that people can see inside the group landing page, but the listing is for the birds. I really don't agree with the decision that all forums must be groups and think that's causing unnecessary groups to be created just to have a place for people to discuss things. If I want to have a "miscellaneous" forum for everything talk, I really don't want to see a "miscellaneous" group in my group directory just to have that. Hidden groups won't work because that hides the forum as well so I think that it will just create bloat with the actual buddypress method.

I really think that this will be a huge hit with everyone once released.

  18. Brajesh - thank you for all your hard work on these ideas! You bring good things to life!

1 - make sure that the tags can be edited or that posts can be re-tagged.
2 - make sure there are hooks or a check box to post to facebook or twitter.
3 - it would be nice to have privacy and hide-ability

  19. One last thing...and maybe this is more for Phillip's plugin...

Right now, you can't specify a single gallery to insert into a post or page on a blog. You can choose a member and choose how many, but not which one.

    Posted 1 year ago #
  20. It should fully translateable. :)

  21. Thank you all and sorry for the 2-3 days of my inactivity in the forum. I am not a travel friendly person, so got some small health issues. Got them resolved. I am trying all my energy to meet the Sundays deadline of all the projects I posted in the post about upcoming post. let us see what comes ahead :)

    Posted 1 year ago #
  22. @Brajesh

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: your health is THE most important thing in your life. If it's not up to par, everything else will lag behind too. So if you're having difficulty meeting deadlines, I've 2 suggestions for you:
1 - Don't make so many deadlines, and
2 - If you can't meet the ones you have, don't worry, we'll wait :-)

I, for one (and I think most of your members will be in agreement on this), heartily thank you for everything you do for us!

  23. @Brajesh, what @pcwriter said. Get well soon.

    Posted 1 year ago #
  24. @Patrick, @mercime
    Thank you :)
Hmm, I won't go on vacation anytime soon, every time I travel, I get some health problems, so better I am going to abstain from it for next 6 months and concentrate on work.

    @Patrick
I take your suggestion heartily, I always think, I am going to complete it today./soon but the things get delayed. taking it more seriously now before promising anything :)

Btw, this week all the promises will be met :)

  27. @Serafettin
I am sorry for holding this plugin for so long. I have yet to implement 2 features, forum delete which will allow admins to move topic to another forum and rss feed for the forum.

There are some styling left too, so I will be a little more cautious before promising a date, hopefully anytime before Saturday.

  28. hi all
Just to keep you informed on the topic, for all those who are wondering where is the global forum.
I had a weird problem with bp-forums causing all my global forum to not list any topic. Spent more than 5 hours on debugging and found it to be a problem with the way bp-groups does things, It was adding filters to the sql for topic automatically for all the BB Query.

Anyway, got around this few minutes ago, so I hope to put global forum online today itself, but if I am unable to do that, please have a little patience, It will be available as the first thing tomorrow.

    Thank you all
    Brajesh
